West Tennessee Environmental Education Spring Workshop & Field Trip – Memphis Botanic Garden
Memphis Botanic Garden Event:
Time to enjoy a great day of fun professional development at the UT Martin Jackson Center! Begin the day with sessions that will introduce you to the afternoon field experiences at Coon Creek Science Center presented by Project WET and TN Earth Science Teachers (TEST) along with sessions for integrating reading with science using common core standards, presented by Dr. Becky Cox, President of the Tennessee Educators of Aquatic and Marine Sciences (TEAMS) and UT Martin education faculty member. Travel to Coon Creek Science Center for an afternoon of hands-on excitement. Begin with a modern day pond study led by Project WET director Michelle Rogers and Kathy DeWein. Afterwards dig for fossils in one of North America’s most important fossil sites led by UT Martin Geology Professor, Dr. Michael Gibson . The Coon Creek area was once part of the Gulf of Mexico and is loaded with superbly preserved Upper Cretaceous marine shells and vertebrate remains that are 70 million years old. The best part about this experience is you will be able to keep all the fossils you find! Visit http://www.memphismuseums.org/coon_creek-overview/ to learn more.
